OLD FASHIONED STAR

When Emma Rhodes of Virginia set out to sew a quilt for her grandson in 1935, she was determined to create a pattern that “no boy could ignore. So, Emma settled on the Old Fashioned Star, a bold design that originated with the Old Order of Mennonites of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. In quilting circles, that order is well known for its vibrant and highly artistic quilt designs. Emma embraced the vibrancy part with relish, choosing a color scheme that played concave yellow patches off convex red pieces, teal diamonds, a pink background and yellow sashing.

Comments by the Artist

This is the largest of the initial set of quilt murals and had to be painted in a warehouse. A blank wood canvas of this size can be intimidating. The best thing to do is just get started and not think about it too much. The end result is beautiful.
