Amish Country Courtesies Amish Country Travel Tips

Amish Country Courtesies Religious beliefs prohibit the Amish from being photographed. Never ask an Amish person—adult or child—to pose for a photograph.

Respect the privacy of Amish homes and farms; they’re private property. In the rural countryside, however, many farm- and home-based businesses—stores, produce stands and artisans’ workshops—welcome customers. Look for signs advertising retail businesses and goods for sale.

For your safety, don’t feed or pet the horses, including those grazing in pastures or pulling Amish buggies and tied to hitching rails.

To learn more about Amish and Mennonite heritage, visit the Menno-Hof center in Shipshewana. The center provides guided tours of exhibits and an audio-visual presentation about the Amish, Mennonite and Hutterite ways of life.
