Along the Heritage Trail . . . Elkhart

Past Meets Present
Known as the “City with a Heart” this vibrant riverside community blends a storied past with modern touches. 19th century architecture mixes easily with contemporary restaurants and shops in an emerging Arts & Entertainment District. The cornerstone of the city’s artistic renaissance: the 2011 grand opening of the renovated Lerner Theatre, a fixture in the city since 1929. The nearby
RiverWalk links waterside parks with pedestrian friendly city streets.

Creative Cuisine
Downtown Elkhart’s restaurants offer varied menus in unique settings — American classics in a theatre turned ale house, hearty Irish fare served outdoors by the water or continental cuisine surrounded by art and antiques. You can ponder your options with an espresso and a stroll down Main Street.

Historic Treasures
Ride the rails of history at the National New York Central Railroad Museum. See the region’s most extensive collection of works by Norman Rockwell at the Midwest Museum of American Art. For a glimpse of gilded-era opulence, tour the Beaux Arts beauty of Ruthmere mansion.

Great Green Spaces
The City takes great pride in its parks. Several unfurl along Elkhart’s rivers. The gem of the system, Island Park, commands the waters just off-shore where the St. Joseph and Elkhart merge downtown. The fun changes by the season at the NIBCO Water and Ice Park. This unique Riverside facility — the first of its kind in the world — alternates winter skating with summer fun splashing among the geysers and gardens.
