Boot Lake Nature Preserve is a 300-acre property acquired by Elkhart County Parks from the City of Elkhart in late 2017. It is the second largest park in the county with 280 acres of protected land and another 20 acres left for possible development. The property has a unique history having served as a sludge farm for many years and even a tree nursery. Now that its unique habitat is continuously being restored, the preserve attracts a variety of wildlife, several being state endangered animal and plant species. Along with providing prairie, wetland, and woodland habitat for native flora and fauna, the preserve offers numerous hiking trails, overlooks, and a pier for visitors to enjoy.
