For the Birds Winter Walk

Join the Great Backyard Bird Count! Help Wellfield Botanic Gardens collect information on our birds. Indiana Master Naturalist Mary Kauffmann-Kennel is leading a winter bird walk at Wellfield Botanic Gardens for participants to join in the excitement on Saturday, February 13 at 9:00 AM. Come out and get hands-on experience with birding. Learn to identify common Indiana bird species while keeping count of the species we see. Birders of all ages and experiences are welcome. Appropriate for ages 13 and up. Participants will each receive an Indiana bird pocket guide. The cost is $8 for non-members and $3 for members. Dress for the weather as most of the class is held outside. Bring your binoculars. Registration is required and space is limited. Registration is available online at or you can call 574-266-2006.

The Great Back Yard Bird Count is held from February 12-15 through a partnership between The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon, and Bird Studies Canada. It allows bird watchers of all ages to be a part of a North American online citizen-science project. Participants collect data on wild birds, enter it into the website and the results are displayed in near real time. To learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count go to
