Get to know local Amish entrepreneurs and see first-hand how they operate their unique enterprises. Hear the stories of friendly, hardworking people who use their special talents to create products and build businesses that serve the local community and beyond. Get a behind the scenes look at how horse blankets and horse collars are made and gain a new understanding of their uses. Peek inside an Amish coffin, empty of course, handmade by LaVern Miller of Spring Valley Woodcraftand and learn the differences between coffins and caskets. These stops are fun, authentic, appealing to every age and gender and sure to be a hit with your group.

The smell of homemade applesauce simmering on your grandmother’s stove. There’s nothing quite like it. Rediscover those forgotten days at Plain Foods – Dutch Country Butters where Dorothy will greet you in her large industrial kitchen. Here you’ll learn Dorothy’s process for creating and canning delicious fruit and vegetable butter, Amish peanut butter spread, hot pepper butter, and of course delicious applesauce all made with locally sourced ingredients. Don’t leave without a tasty sample and maybe a jar or two or your favorite!

Step into the rustic rural shop of Loren and Dorcas Yoder and the first thing that greets you is the irresistible aroma of finely cured leather. Hides hang from the walls; exotic skins drape Loren’s workbench alongside tools for cutting, stamping and sewing. This Old Order Amish couple work with expertly tanned cowhides to rare skins like shark, python, eel and alligator. All are designed with expert craftsmanship, making each piece a durable testament to fine workmanship. Watch as custom belts are hand cut. Learn how the Yoder’s seek out the best materials to fashion into belts, purses, wallets and other leather goods. You’ll leave with great memories and (we promise!) at least one piece of handcrafted perfection. Open 10-4:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, Closed Sundays OR by group advance reservation.

Real Indiana Housewives Tour of Amish Country
$50 pp for full 8 hour day tour including guide, meals, demos
Forget reality TV instead meet the real housewives of Amish Country. Get a first-hand look at a day in the life of a real Amish woman and the cottage industries they’ve created. Visit with an authentic Amish housewife to learn how household chores are done without electrical appliances. Learn how the families make a living without modern technology ruling everyday life!
We have many options to personalize your day in the life of our Amish counterparts. You may enjoy a cinnamon roll demo with Elaine or Mary Lou, and visit Carolyn’s home for a haystack lunch and a peanut butter crumb pie making demo in her Amish banquet hall. We’ll see a basket weaver and the thriving business she manages. No tour would be complete without a chat with an Amish school teacher and an after school treat-a whoopie pie to take home with you.

Description: Esther Farmwald draws from a lifetime among Northern Indiana’s Old Order Amish to offer an introduction to a fascinating but often-misunderstood people. Visitors will see and experience the personal, professional, and religious lives of the Amish as they seek to uphold tradition while adapting to the world’s influences.
Regardless of their size, tours are tailored to visitors’ specific interests. They can visit Amish manufactures of all kinds and the renowned Quilt Gardens. In Nappanee visits can include a family farm ($5.00 pp), a typical rural general store and an Amish “supermarket.” In the Middlebury/Shipshewana we can visit a number of Amish owned and operated businesses: watch noodle and cheese making, working bees, visit a buggy shop, etc. In both areas we can enjoy traditional homemade dinners at an Amish home.
Bus tour – $125 for 2 hours + $30 for each additional hour
Esther can also provide a personal tour in your vehicle – $75 for 2 hours
