River Activities

River Activities Amish Country’s two major rivers supply options for outdoor recreation, from leisurely canoeing and kayaking on the tranquil and wide St. Joseph to more challenging paddling on the narrow and swift-running Elkhart River. Tips for anglers: On the St. Joe, fish for walleye just below the dam east of Elkhart. Wetlands and woodlands along the St. Joe also make great wildlife- and bird-watching spots. Both rivers are excellent for bluegill, catfish, and small- and large-mouth bass. You also can kayak and wildlife watch along the canals at River Preserve County Park near Benton.
